How to play Spy
Spy is a party word game for 3 or more players. Everyone gets the same secret word, except the spy, who gets a different one. Give clues, listen closely, and vote out the spy. One round takes about five minutes.
The rules
- Get your card. Pass one phone around, or everyone joins a room on their own phone. Look at your card without letting anyone see it.
- Give clues. Going around the circle, each player says one short clue about their word. Prove you know it, but stay vague enough that the spy can't work it out.
- Discuss. Ask questions, compare clues and look for the player who doesn't quite fit.
- Vote. Point at your suspect together. Then reveal the spy in the app.
Who wins?
Civilians win if they vote out the spy and the spy can't guess their word.
The spy wins by surviving the vote, or by guessing the civilians' word after being caught.
The spy's hint
You choose how much help the spy gets:
Close word: the spy gets something almost the same.
Same category: the spy gets another word from the category.
No hint: the spy gets nothing and has to bluff from the clues.
Tips
- As a civilian, don't say anything too obvious. The spy is listening.
- As the spy, let others go first and match their clues.
- With 7 or more players, try two spies who know each other.
FAQ
How many players do you need?
At least 3. It gets more fun with 5 to 10 players, and you can add more spies for bigger groups.
Do I need to download an app or sign up?
No. Spy runs in the browser, is free and needs no account. You can add it to your home screen to play offline.
Can we play with only one phone?
Yes. In pass-and-play mode one phone goes around the table and each player looks at their card in turn.
Which languages are supported?
The app is available in 15 languages, with word lists in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
